Batidores (Outrider)

by Nick Dore

In my article which appeared in E.D. Vol. VIII, No.3, on Iturbide's 1821 entry into Mexico City, I translated "batidores" as drummers, although the word should have had a question mark following it, but it got lost somewhere along the line. After searching through dictionaries to find the right word and through a number of other works on Spanish uniforms, I now realise that a batidore is an outrider, and as I understand it, he usually carries a lance and is drawn from the elite company. Sorry for that. Nick.

( Yes, I did leave out the question mark, my apologies guys. T.D.H. )

I have removed the word "drummers" from the original article and substituted the word "outriders." -- RL
