Overview of Magazines/Journals

by Terry D. Hooker

Now for the magazines and journals.

Journal of the Alamo Battlefield Association, Vol.1. No.1., Quarterly, 42 pages in A5 format, contains two articles which take up the majority of the journal, the first "Crockett Goes to Texas: A Newspaper Chronology", by Gary S. Zaboly, and "Drawing Truthful Deductions", ( Sam Houston and the aftermath of the defeat at the Alamo ) by Thomas R. Lindley, both are interesting reading and well researched making this journal a boon to the serious collector of Texan War of Independence data, the address if interested is : Alamo Battlefield Association, 414A Kings Court, San Antonio, Texas 78212, U.S.A. alas I don't know the subcription rates.

Air Forces Monthly, No.88, July 1995, has the article "BAN Comandante Espora: Javier Mosquera visits the Argentine Naval Air Base at Puerto Belgrano", 5 pages of useful data with coloured and B/W photographs.

Gazette des Uniformes, No. 154, May/June 1995, has "La Prussianisation de L'Armee Chilienne", by Juan Angel Torti, 5 pages of text and coloured illustrations l0 of these are contempory photographs that are helpful.

Air Enthusiast, Winter 1994, No.56, has "Brazil - 1, U-199 - 0", by Ricardo Bonalume Neto, 14 pages of text and illustrations about the Brazilian W.W.II campaign against German submarines off the coast of Brazil, and covers the sinking of U-l99 on the 31st July 1943, some really good photographs of the Brazilian planes of the period.

Fortitudine: Bulletin of the Marine Corps Historical Program, Vol. XXIV, Winter 1994-1995, No.3. has two articles on the latest events in Haiti they are: "Marine Historian Records 'Uphold Democracy' in Haiti", by Capt. J.T. Quinn II, U.S.M.C., 4 pages, and "Combat Artist Preserves Haiti Service Scenes on Paper", by Charles G. Grow, U.S.M.C., 4 pages, both give good data on this event in Sept-Oct. 1994, although I'm waiting for a more detailed account to be published someday?

Le Briquet, No.2. 1995, has "Guadeloupe 1800 - 1810", by Didier Davin, 5 pages with 2 B/W plates, interesting and helpful text.

Military Modelling, October 1995, has "The West Indian Regiment Remembered", by Don Cribbs, 2 pages, 9 coloured photographs which are a welcome addition to my data on this unit.

Military Collector & Historian, Journal of the Company of Hilitary Historians, Washington D.C., Vol. XIV No.4. Winter 1993, has "Mexican Army Riflemen, the Texas Campaigns, 1835-1836", by Gary S. Zaboly, plate No.711, a useful re-rendering of the now classic Nieto, Brown and Elefter's "Mexican Soldier, 1837-1847" with some additional data from other sources, the coloured plate should look good (also see his article in the Journal of the Alamo Battlefield Association on the previous page).

The Quarterly Journal of Military History, Summer 1992, Vol.4. No.4. has "A Sanguinary Obsession", by Dolores Moyano Martin, 14 pages with 4 coloured plates by Candido Lopez and a really good B/W photograph of Paraguayan prisoners from the war, this journal is published in hardback and should be available at discount book-shops for 1.99 pounds.

Club Francais de la Figurine Historique, Special Number, "La liberation de L'Amerique Espagnole: Seconde Partie - Tome 1; Argentine - Chili - Perou Bolivie", 90 pages of text, 2 coloured plates and 6 B/W plates, text by Louis de Beaufort and Daniel Peyrot, plates by L. de Beaufort, I'm sure that most people interested in this period would find something of help here, the price is 130 FF. please write to M. Michel Clemenceau, Secretaire du C.F.F.H., 5 Allee des Saules, 94240 L'Hay-les-Roses, France, (Tel: 46.65.86.10.).

Just received the latest work by Rene Chartrand, "Canadian Military Heritage, Volume II, 1755 - 1871", published by Art Global, 384 Laurier Avenue W., Montreal, Quebec, H2V 2K7, priced at $50.00 Canadian, 222 pages, nearly every page has a coloured illustration by such as Eugene Leliepvre, Charles Stadden, Gerry Embleton and Ron wolstad, plus many contempory illustrations and coloured photographs of actual uniforms and weapons. Chapter 3 deals with the pacific coast and it's colonization from 1725 - 1795 with details of the Spanish garrison at Nootka in 1790's and the British interest in this region. Rene Chartrand's text is, as always, very easy to read and sink into with plenty of information which is rarely seen and the set will become a classic for the Canadian Military collectors and uniform buffs in the future, if not already.
