Additions And Amendments
To El Dorado Articles

I received these additions and amendments to El Dorado articles from Alberto del Pino Menck, a few are my own typing errors while others are further notes.

VOL. IV. No.2. Pag. 27-28. - Brazilian Colonel 2nd Corps of Voluntarios la Patria, Sao Paulo, 1865-70.

This should read Rio de Janeiro, 1865-70. The 2nd Corps of Voluntarios da Patria ( 2do.Corpo de Voluntarios da Patria), was raised in the Court of Rio de Janeiro not Sao Paulo under decree of Feb. 27, 1865, Day Order (Ordem do Dia ) No.437. On Dec. 20, 1866, Mariscal Caxias changed the number of the 2nd Corps of Volunteers to the 24th Corpo de Voluntarios da Patria. The Province of Sao Paulo formed the following Corps of Volunteers; 7th, 42nd, and 45th.

VOL. IV. No.3. Pag. 31/32. - Order of Battle from Palleja's Campaign Diary.

    (1) First published by "Imprenta del Pueblo", 1st Volume in 1865 and second volume in 1866, 2nd edition by Biblioteca Artigas, Coleccion de Clasicos Uruguayos, in 1960 (2 vols.).

    (2) on page 32 there is a mistake. Look under Argentine Army, 1st Army Corps, 1st Division, Colonel I. Rivas 1st Brigade, this should read "Teniente Coronel Boerr, Batallon San Nicolas" instead of the 6th Line Batt. This mistake is repeated by Schneider and other authors since the 1st edition. The San Nicolas Battalion was the unit inwhich the very well known artist of the war served, Lieutenant Candido Lopez. You can see that the 6th Line Batt. is in its correct place in the 2nd Division, (Col. Arredondo).

VOL. V. No.4. - Paraguayan War - Colonel Jose M. Aguiar.

The heading should read "Aguiar" rather than "Aguilar". He was ADC to Marshal Lopez in the pre-war period, commander of all Cavalry Regiments of the "Division del Sud" in the Corrientes Campaign and commander of the Cavalry in the column of Colonel Jose E. Diaz and Hilario Marco in Tuyuty (24.5.1866) and was killed at Cerro Cora in March 1870.

VOL. III. No. 4. Pag. 8.- General Eugenio Garzon.

Soldier in the Wars of Independence was a Uruguayan being born in Montevideo in 1796 son of Spanish and Uruguayan parents, although this region was under the jurisdiction of Buenos Ayres at that time. He was a soldier under Artigas, while in the 9th Regiment of the Provincias Unidas, he was promoted to Lieutenant, in 1817 he was part of the Army of the Andes under San Martin and then went in the expedition to Liberate Peru, this time with the rank of Captain (1821) being part of the 2nd Battalion of Peru, saw action at Rio Bamba and at Pichincha. On 15.6.1822 promoted to Sargento Mayor (Major) and commander of the 2nd Battalion of Infantry which was in the Army of the South under the command of Colonel Santa Cruz. In 1826 at Buenos Aires promoted to Lt. Colonel of Infantry in the Army of the United Provinces (Ejercito de las Naciones Unidas) as the commander off the 3rd Battalion of Cazadores. Took part in the War against Imperial Brazil until the peace of 1828. The 3rd Batt. of Cazadores stayed with the United Provinces, while Col. Garzon was given command of the 1st Batt. of Cazadores who were to remain with the newly independent Republic of Uruguay. His later military career involved both Argentina and Uruguay, becoming a General in 1838, with the title of General in Chief of the Auxiliary Army, y senalado como el future presidente uruguayo, por su amistad personal con Urquiza y su prestigio personal, fallecio sorpresivamente en 1851. The uniform that Garzon is shown wearing is that of the 2nd Battalion of Infantry from Peru with the rank of Major.

VOL. IV. No.6. Pag. 10. - La Legion Francesa en el Sitio de Montevideo.

    (1) Francisco Rivera, should read "Fructuoso Rivera", (First President of Uruguay).

    (2) Comandante Thiubault, should read "Colonel Jean C. Thiebaut (the C. is for Crhysostome which looks likece spelling mistake to most people. T.D.H.). He was the commander of the French Volunteers during the siege of Montevideo, from 1843 to his death in March 1851, he was also at the Battle of Waterloo as a 2nd Lieutenant of Artillery.

    (3) Page 13. - historiador uruguayo Don C.M. Braconnay should read "cl historiador frances Padre Salesiano Claudio Maria Braconnay, natural de Alta Saboya (Evian-les-Bains)".

    Al formarse la Legion de Voluntarios franceses contaba con 4 Batallones y el 1.5.1843 estaba organizada en la siguiente forma;
    Commandante         J. C. Thiebaut

            1 Cie de Volyigeurs,
    Batallon No.3. (Chasseurs)         Cdte. J. B. Brie.
            6 Cies de Chasseurs.
    Batallon Pasivo.         Cdte. Joubert.
            3 Cies.
Artilleria: 2 Baterias a las ordenes de los Capitanes Alazard y Dousseau.
Zapadores: ( sapeurs )         Capitan Gielis.

[Many thanks Alberto for these additional notes, I am only pleased to hear about new data relating to published article as are, I believe, the other contributors. In this way we all gain and the frontiers of knowledge are expanded in the Society for future authors. ...T.D.H.]
