Last weekend I managed to go down to London for a day to visit my friend Ron Poulter and visit some book shops that I know, the books that I bought will have to be included in the next issue of E.D. as its a bit tight for space again. Ron showed me the books that he had managed to purchase over the months new and second-hand, I will not mention the second-hand books, but the new once might be of interest to some of you. The first is "Indian Revolts in Northern New Spain, 1680-1786", by Roberto Mario Salmon, pp156. hardback £ 29.95 or softback £ 14.95, obtainable from "The Eurospan Group", 3 Henrietta St. Covent Garden, London, WC2E 8LU, Tel. 071 240 0856, they also have a catalogue. While the University of New Mexico Press, 1720 Lomas Blvd. N.E., Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87131-1591, U.S.A. have published these two works "Spanish Blue Coats; the Catalonian Volunteers in North - Western New Spain 1767 - 1810", by Joseph P. Sanchez. and "The Llanos Frontier in Colombian History 1830 - 1930", by Jane M.Rausch, pp416. 8 maps, 214 halftone plates, priced at $50.00. Plus a book that he bought which was near to his research "Mary English; A Friend of Bolivar", by Drusilla Scott, pub. Book Guild Ltd. 1.5 High St. Lewes Sussex. As a parting gift he gave me a review copy of "Gentlemans Sons" by Ian Fletcher and himself, this deals with the Guards [British] during the Peninsula and Waterloo Campaigns of 1808-1815, Ian and Ron have managed to produce not only a nice looking tome but also one that is very well researched on a subject that is often delegated to a chapter, if that, Ian uses contemporary descriptions of the various actions, campaign rigours and dress, his flowing text makes this an easy and enjoyable book to pick up and read, at any-time. The illustrations show the men on campaign rather than parade uniforms, again using various contemporary letters and portraits. It is 244 pages with 4 colour plates by Ron, 11 figs. in all, 7 colour plates of paintings and 75 black and white photos, plus 20 maps, published by Spellmount Ltd, Tunbridge Wells, at £ 25. Let's hope that Ron and Ian can persuade this publishing company to publish another title on Latin American History?
