in the States

This is the second installment of what I hope will become a semi-regular column on books related to Latin American Military History, both new and used, on sale, being offered by mail order firms in the U.S. [see pp.30-32 E.D. No.5. Vol IV, for the first installment]

A number of works have appeared in the latest catalogues of the discount firm of Edward R. Hamilton [Falls Village, CT. 06031 - 5000]. Fred Olsen's On the Trail of the Arawaks item No. 807117, explores the fate of this group of Caribbean Indians who disappeared soon after the arrival of Columbus [$32.95 now $6.95].

In Bourbons and Brandy; Imperial Reform in 18th Century Arequipa, item No.805599, Kendell Brown looks at the impact of the colonial reform of this region of Southern Peru [$29.95, now $7.95].

Insurrection or Loyalty; the Breakdown of the Spanish American Empire, by J. Dominquez, item No.810118, [$29.95, now $3.95] note; this same book is also offered by Barnes and Noble for $3.98, item No. 1762202.

There are two works being offered on the early history of independent Mexico: Donathon Olliff's Reforma Mexico and the U.S. - A Search for Alternatives to Annexation, 1854-1861, item No. 808059, covers Mexican foreign relations prior to the French takeover [$21.50, now $1.95], while Meir Expedition Diary, item No.790982, is a first person account of the botched Texan invasion of 1842, [$22.50, now $7.95].

Another work on Mexico, dealing with the Revolution is John Mason Hart's Revolutionary Mexico, item No.587648, which places the revolution in the context of worldwide upheaval [$38.50, now $24.95].

The role of Latin America in the U.S. entry into W.W. II is explored in David Haglund's Latin America and the Transformation of U.S. Strategic Thought, 1936-1940, item No.806005, [$19.95, now $4.95].

The contribution of the U.S. remaining Latin American possession to the Korean War is covered by W.W. Harris in Puerto Rico's Fighting 65th U.S. Infantry, item No.806153, [$12.95, now $6.95].

There are two works being offered on the South Atlantic conflict, while D. Brown's The Royal Navy and the Falklands War, item No.788384, focuses on the British side [paperback $2.95], Martin Middlebrook's The Fight For The Malvinas, item No.584010, is probably the best account of the Argentine side available in English [$24.95, now $6.95].

A smaller number of Latin American related works have appeared in the recent catalogues of the discount firm of Barnes & Noble [126 Fifth Ave, New York, N.Y. 10011-5666, phone (201) 767-7079].

There are two works dealing with the conquest of the Americas from the native viewpoint; M.Leon-Portilla's The Broken Spears; The Aztec Account of the Conquest of Mexico, item No.1805787, is limited to the immediate conquest of Mexico [paperback $13.00], while R. Wright's Stolen Continents: the Americas through Indian Eyes, item No.1804897, covers the entire western hemisphere, from the time of the European arrival to the present [$22.95, now $20.65].

A work that covers the conflict between Texas and Mexico is Albert Nofi's The Alamo and the Texas War of Independence: 1835-36, item No.1799055, [$16.95, now $12.95],

Lastly there is E.Abbott's Haiti: The Duvaliers & Their Legacy, item No.1699636, this examines the contemporary turbulence of Haiti [$19.95, now $4.95].

A University Press which is offering a few works related to Latin America for sale is Louisiana State University Press [write in care of Spring Mail Sale, Baton Rouge, LA.70893]. R. Seckinger's The Brazilian Monarchy and the South American Republics, 1822-1831, item No. SEBRAC, which has been mentioned before in the pages of E.D., examines the early history of Brazil's international relations [$27.50,now $6.00].

In Haiti and the Great Powers 1902-1915, item No.PLHAIC, Brenda Gayle Plummer looks at the impact of military and commercial competion on Haiti [$30.00, now $12.00].

The impact of foreign presence [over 400,000] in another Latin American nation is explored in Frederick Luebke's Germans in Brazil; Comparative History of Culture Conflict During WW I, item No. LUGER, [$37.50, now $8.00].

Brasshat Books is a used book dealer which specializes in works on the history of the U.S. Marine Corps and, as such, offers a considerable number of works on U.S. intervention in Latin America [R.R.2, Box 197 "A", Pike, N.H. 03780]. Brasshat offers two works on the U.S.-Mexican War: William Jay's A Review of the Causes & Consequences of the Mexican War [1849] [$8.00] and E. J. Nichols' Zach Taylor's Little Army [$9.00].

Another work dealing with U.S.-Mexican relations is P. E. Haley's Revolution & Intervention: Diplomacy with Mexico 1910-1917 [$14.50].

Our Jungle Diplomacy [1944] by W.Sands, is a general study of U.S. intervention in the Caribbean and Central America [$16.00], while S. M. Fuller's Marines in the Dominican Republic, 1916-1924 is a fine illustrated study of one particular intervention [$14.50] and J.McCrocklin's Garde D'Haiti, 1915-1934 is a study of the forces raised and trained by the U.S. on Haiti [$45.00]. Tad Szulc's Dominican Diary covers the 1965 revolt and subsequent U.S. intervention in the Dominican Republic [paperback, $2.50].

A more pricey used book dealer offering a few works on Latin American military history in his latest catalogue, No.21, is Owen D.Kubik - Fine Books [3474 Clar-Von Drive, Dayton, OH., 45430, tel. (513) 294-0253. Troy Floyd's The Anglo-Spanish Struggle for Mosquitia, item No.121, examines the neglected topic of the British fight to maintain her influence in Central America [$50.00], K.Jack Bruer's The Mexican War: 1846-1848, item No.315, [$45.00], lastly there's Frank Cundall's Jamaica's Part in the Great War, 1914-1918, item No.246, [$125.00]

Morningside Bookshop is a mail order firm that specializes in books on the American Civil War [P.O.Box 1087, Drayton, OH., 45401], E.Harter's The Lost Colony of the Confederacy, item No.881 "A", deals with the settlement in Brazil, [paper back, $9.95].
