Spanish-American War

Just recieved a copy of Greg Novak's book "REMEMBER THE MAINE AND TO HELL WITH SPAIN", which was sent to me by FREI KORPS 15 of 25 Princetown Road, Bangor, Co. Down, BT20 3TA. Northern Ireland. The price is £4.25 plus postage and well worth it! its 84 pages of good Organizational and Historical data with a section on the uniforms of both sides and only 3 pages on notes for wargamers which goes to show the amount of information that's in it, covering the Civil War in Cuba 1895-98, The U.S. Invasions and Battles on Cuba, Puerto Rica and the Philippines. I do recommend this book for anyone with the slightest interest in this period, this book will encourage more research into this subject by historians and wargamers, can I hope model makers too? (Frei Korps 15 make 33 figures to go with the period write for details] T.D.H.

Recieved from fellow member NIGEL THOMAS a revue copy.of his OSPREY "MEN AT ARMS" book "CENTRAL AMERICAN WARS 1959-89" the text being helped by Snr. Carlos Caballero Jurado with colour plates by Simon McCouaig. If you haven't already seen it and your interested in modern wars and uniforms this is one to activate research on a little known subject.

We have all seen the photograph that have appeared in TIME and PARIS MATCH dealing with these wars over the decades but this book is most helpful on its illustrations showing unit badges and insignia, while the text is compact and informative and again very helpful. Each section in my mind could easily be an Osprey in its own right, by I don't have to fork out the money to print them and run the risks. (I hope that a follow on book will deal with Modern Latin American Armies and Equipment). A worthwhile book for any modern collector and well done Nigel.

Three Titles

Three titles of books were also sent in by fellow member Ernie Stewart who thought they could be of interest to readers;

    "THE INCREDIBLE YANQUI, The Career of Lee Christmas", BY HERMAN DEUTSCH, Pub. Longmans, London, 1931. [Christmas was a soldier of fortune in Central America from 1894-1917]

    "DESTINY AND GLORY", BY EDWARD S.WALLACE, Pub. Coward-McCann Inc. New York, 1957. (This is a history of the filibusters in the 19th century. Of course much of it is about Wlker, but it also has things like Kirby Smith's effort to set up a Confederate Colony in Mexico under Maximilian.

    "SO FAR FROM GOD", BY DAVID S.EISENHOWER, this is a new book out now [sorry don't know the Publishers as yet. T.D.H.], it has more of a military nature than most, probably since the author is an ex-army officer and is General Eisenhower's son.
