FIG 1. QUARTERMASTER, "15 JUIN 65". FIG.2. PRIVATE, [untitled but presumably Infantry]. Under this figure Vanson has noted "the tops of the sleeves were set very low [though it doesn't show in the sketches]; the hat cords ended in two acorns" rather than tassels, "French cartridge pouches were worn and the gaiters were entirely of leather, including the buttons." [note that he depicted all the gaiters as ending at the ankle and the hats are rather higher crowned than usually illustrated). A figure of a pioneer is also shown, virtually identical to the Infantry figure but with a short rifle [virtually a carbine] and an Austrian pioneer short sword in place of a bayonet. FIG.3. OFFICER. FIG.4. ARTILLERY HAT PLUME. Red feather, white down tuft, red ball with the base in leather. FIG.5. PRIVATE, wearing overcoat & cap. Under this figure Vanson notes that "the fringed cravat is a personal affection very popular among the Austrians. SOURCE Vanson Sketches, Hotel des Invalides, PARIS.
