Letters and News

1990

By Terry Hooker

I received a letter from the Reverend F.J. Jones in which he informs me/us that in Rodney Dennys book "Heraldry and the Heralds", pub. by Johnathan Cape 1962 has a whole chapter [8] of seven pages on the "Heraldry of Haiti". This includes King, Queen and Princes etc. which if you happen to be interested in Haiti and the emergence of the Revolutionary period this chapter will be of help, thank you for this extra piece of data Rev. Jones.

Triple Alliance War

The other bit of information is on the plate by J.Balaguer dealing with the Argentine troops during the Triple Alliance War [plate 4]; The original paintings by Candido Lopez on the Paraguayan War are in the Museos Historico Nacional and Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Buenos Aires.

With regards to Fig.1. replace "white" in the kepi, cuffs and collar for "red". Source:"Domato Alvary, su vida militares" this General was the commander of the Regiment during the War.

Fig.2. The Cavalry Regiment was a National Guard unit famous for its average during the war. I believe that the headdress is wrong, whereas the skirt is called a "Chiripa". The blouse is known in the River Plate military term of "Camiseta" it is a pattern different to the ones used during the war.

Fig.3. The Argentine National cockade as we know it was not worn until 1871-72.

Fig. 4. I've seen the description of this figure in the Archivo General de Buenos Aires, but I believed that the uniform was for an infantry militia of the City of Bunos Aires.

Fig.5. is from the Lopez painting "Rendicion de Uruguayana, September 18th 1865", the "Carlist"cap should be red with silver tassel and strap and the cuff lace is in the form of an Hungarian knot.

Fig.6. 1st Legion Voluntarios [Lieutenant Colonel Gisibone] Officers of this Battalion used red jackets with cuffs, collar and stripe [on the trousers] of green.

Fig.7. the 4th. Cavalry Regiment was not sent to Paraguay, only two Cavalry Regiments of the Line were sent these were the 1st and 3rd with a small unit from the 2th, the uniform shown was worn by the 3rd and the Escort of Mitre.

Fig.8. this figure is based on the work of Udaondo and it is not very accurate.

[I believe that a number of these errors were the fault my typing, but any data is always of assistence and helps to obtain a clearer picture of what was worn or happened, T.D.H.]
