By Alberto del Pino Menck
Also received during the last few weeks is a letter from the Uruguayan Military Historian, Alberto del Pino Menck, who has produced articles and postcards on the uniforms of Uruguay, and it must he stated here that without his help to me the article which appeared in Military Modeling on the "Uruguayan Uniforms 1916" many years ago would not have been started, it should have read that the pair of us had co-wrote it. Anyway he has sent in some illustration for publication and some notes on previous articles/plates dealing with the Triple Alliance War, the first part concerns my 2 pages on the begining of the War; From 1858 [General Cesar Diaz Revolution] until 1863 [General Flores Revolution] Uruguay was in a peaceful period. The Revolution of Cesar Diaz began on January 1st 1858 and ended on February 2nd 1858, while the Revolution of Flores started on April 19th 1863 and finished on February 21st 1865. the Brazilian Brigade that occupied Villa de hello in the "Department" of Cerro Largo [Uruguay is divided into departments and not Provinces] were; JULIO de 1864. EXERCITO DO SUL [Fronteira con Uruguai] Stationed at SAGE: Stationed at Jaguarao:
Stationed at Santana do Livramento:
TOTAL 3,498 men 1st DEZEMBRE de 1864 INVASION 1st. DIVISION DE INFANTERIA [Osorio]
2nd. DIVISION DE INFANTERIA [Barreto]
TOTAL; 6,000 men SOURCE:
The War is known; for the Paraguayans as the "Guerra Grande", "Guerra del 70", "Guerra Contra la Triple Alianza", and/or the Allied forces "Gueria del Paraguay". State of Corrientes should read "Province". Missones should read Misiones. Marquez de Olinda should read Marques de Olinda. General Wenceleo Robles should read General Wenceslao Robles. Emperor Dom Pedro of Brazil is Dom Perdro II. At least we now know some more data for future use and the correct terms for the divisions of the countries, is Departments & Provinces, which could be a stumbling block for every would-be author in the years to come.
