Uniforms of General Jose Antonio Paez
and his Guard of Honor

1818-1824

By Ron Poulter

The red uniform which he is often shown wearing is taken from a painting by Tobar Tobar of the battle of Carabobo 1821. The only two known contemporary paintings of General Paez show him in a blue hussar jacket, the lace is gold and in the painting is a czapka which is black with gold cords and fittings. He is wearing red trousers with a double gold stripe down the side and was painted about 1824. The other painting shows him with a blue tailcoat of a General of 1822, with a gold pattern on the collar and cuffs, two gold epaulettes and an aiguillette on the right shoulder, again his trousers are red with two gold knots on the front. In both pictures he is wearing a red and gold barrelled sash.

Paez and his Guard of Honour were supplied with British uniforms by Bolivar on September 29 1818, this was part of the full dress uniforms of Colonel Henry Croasdale Wilson's 2nd. Venezuelan Hussars (Red Hussars).

We find in J. H. Robinson's Journal (a surgeon in the army of Bolivar 1817-1820) a description of Paez Guard of Honour "This Guard consists of full three hundred men, picked from the whole army and mounted on the best horses the country can afford. They have every appearance of English troops They wear the same kind of cap used by the English dragoons, a red jacket turned up with yellow, blue cuffs and collar and blue pantaloons with yellow seams" Also Jose Leon Sedeno, a prisoner of the Spanish, Chorreon 4th January 1819, said that "Pass was commanding four hundred men of the Guard of Honour dressed in red".

Paez lance banner was black and twice an large as his men and it was edged with a deep black fringe. The pattern was a white skull and crossed bones with the words " MUERTE 0' LIBERTAD". This was also carried by General Bolivar.

NOTE: In most contemporary pictures a white linen cover in shown worn on campaign over the shako.
