Expedition to Mexico
1861-1867

Sir J. Crampton to Earl Russell
November 1, 1861

by Terry Hooker

Sir J. Crampton to Earl Russell (Received November 5)
Madrid, November 1, 1861
(Extract)

Marshal O'Donnell, in reply to my question as to the number of Spanish ships and troops intended to be sent on the expedition, replied that as nearly as he could at present judge, the squadron would consist of 12 to 14 vessels of different sizes, carrying altogether about 300 guns. These would be accompanied by two large steam-transports, and the number of troops would amount to between 4,000 and 5,000 men.
