Introduction

Cuban Land Campaign
Order of Battle

By Terry D. Hooker

Dedication

This book is dedicated to my good friend S. A. Cone, who has often been in my thoughts whilst typing these following pages of text and was like a beacon amidst the abyss of life.

Sources

For all of the Spanish units which I have listed in this booklet the two sources that have been used are both the "Anuario Militar de 1898," although my first copy was the U.S. War Department's "Notes and Tables on the Organization and Establishment of the Spanish Army in the Peninsula and Colonies", Washington D.C. 1898. This being an English edited translation of the original Spanish version, this original Spanish Army List for 1898 has more information than its American counter-part, a photocopy was sent to me earlier this year to assist with this booklet by the Archivo Militar, Madrid. So far it has been posible to unite both versions, although at the end of each Military Zone or Division I will include the original Spanish recapitulation, which sometimes differs from the U.S. listings. T.D.H.

Thanks

I would like to take this chance to thank the many people who have assisted me with this work, first of all Mr. Ben K. Weed of California, who without his photocopy of the 1898 Spanish Order of Battle (U.S. Government print version), I would not have attempted such a venture. A copy of the original Spanish text was obtained via the good offices of Col. Pedro del Pozo Palazon of the Servicio Historico Militar, Madrid which greatly assisted the finer details, including all Cavalry and Artillery units plus volunteers.

The U.S. text was nearly all due to Dave Cole of the Centre of Military History, Washington D.C., who sent books and photocopies of original unit listings for the years 1898 - 1899, this really helped a great deal, it was with luck that my friend Ed Milligan was on-hand to help me obtain the last 3 U.S unit organizations while on my stay in Washington D.C. this year, organizing a visit to the National Archives and the U.S. Marine Archives, while obtaining a U.S. Volunteer listing from Albert F. Gleim of Virginia which had me stumped. Many thanks to you all.

A Base

This booklet is at least a base to use for future research into this war, it is by no means, in my opinion, the last word on the subject as there are many avenues that one could go down if time was unlimited, any mistake in the text is solely down to myself and I apologize now for them (there's bound to be more than one!). I do hope that this work, although not a good read, is a useful one to later-day researchers.
