Solidarity

Possible Moves 1

by Vince Zahnle

Here are some Solidarity moves; while they do not involve decisive action at this point, I hope to steer America to her rightful place vis-a-vis the Evil Empire (froth, drool).

ACTION: USA -- the leader of the "free" world
RESULT: US political leadership feels ideologically impelled to take a strong active role in democratization of Eastern Europe
REASONS: 1. Ideology -- "Our system is morally "superior" 2. Guilt -- Memories of Western impotence when 1956 uprisings were ruthlessly crushed still sting, 3. Politics -- The idea does no immediate harm to domestic sacred cows; many Congressmen sign on to early, vague expressions of idea to make political hay (they may live to regret this)

ACTION: (YES-AND) USABig military with n
RESULT:Strong military-industrial concensus builds for a "pro-active" US role in liberating Eastern Eur
REASONS: 1. It's the right war at the right time in the right place -- US forces have been training and preparing for a European showdown since the Airlift, and have never been readier, 2. The sharks smell blood -- Soviet internal problems (ethnic and economic) signal structural weakness in the Soviet state, 3. Self-preservation -- The Sword has been drawn for many years; use will justify its continued existence.

I hope all is well with you and yours as I drag the Nation to the brink of nuclear war.
