Tom Elsworth's Half Baked Idea

An Interstellar Colonisation Game

by Chris Engle

I am pleased this time to print one of Tom's ideas -- Buck Rogers and all that, well maybe not. But I've always fancied the idea of space colonies (with space battles in bright primary colors!). I've made attempts to make games on it but with no success. Personally, the great distances Involved, and the mathematical descriptions of the universe exceed me. I have never gotten beyond thinking about scale when I find myself sliding comfortable back into the 18th century (ah ... simplicity).

The Universe

The universe consists of 6 stellar systems each represented by a table 4 foot by 3 foot. Each table has a star and 3 planets which move in rectangular (to help the umpire) "eliptical" orbits. Orbits are 10 bounds long (i.e. is the year). This is not realistic since the years axe all the same length, but so what?
