Small Journal Thoughts

by Chris Engle

Welcome to EGG 25! Is there anyone of you interested in becoming the new editor of this publication? If you are, or know someone who might be interested, write and let me now. Whoever takes it gets all the back issues! We can negotiate the rest.

Howard Whitehouse brought up a very interesting idea in a recent conversation. He was saying that when he advertises in very small specialized journals like EGG, or Heliograph, he gets about as many responses as he gets from ads in slick glossy mags that go out to 10,000 people. It started me to thinking. Do people actually read the magazines they get?

Howard suggests that they don't. Small selective groups, though, do. I know I read all of the NUGGET, when it comes. I read a good bit of MWAN, when it comes. When I got the Courier, a few years ago, I read the articles that jumped out at me, but I at least reviewed all the articles. When I pick up a Dragon Magazine (which is not to often) I just look at the pictures.

No wonder they put so much color in them.

It looks like the jump from specialized amateur magazines to the mass market is a big step, since new things are often ignored. I'll have to think more about this.

I've started making wire trees for wargame terrain. I take 20 gage wire, cut off two equal lengths, twist them together and then unravel a few strands to turn into limbs and roots. They look good. They should make my future con games look much better.
