One More Year

by Chris Engle

Welcome to EGG 24! This marks the end of 9 years of EGGs. The quality of the whole thing has steadily increased over that time and I am proud of what I accomplished. Now it is time for a change.

(ominous music swells through the room)

I've decided to do one more year of EGG and wrap it up at EGG 30.

I guess I want to explain why I want to do this. It is a want not a need. When I started EGG I had two goals in mind, 1. was to create a forum to talk about experimental game ideas (EGG has done this admirably), 2. was to provide a forum for the development and dissemination of MGs. I feel both of these goals have been accomplished.

I started EGG with a sense of mission. I had some things I wanted to say. It's taken me 9 years to do it, but I've just about said my peace. Fortunately my senate filibuster has not bothered anyone but the interested. The writing has been good for me. My personal confidence increased 10 fold. My spelling improved! And my ability to write is much better. EGG made that possibly since I've always written 90% of everything in it.

A couple of years ago I was writing a lot more than I am now. I made articles for EGG and other magazines. I don't have that kind of time now, so writing for EGG has reduced the amount of writing I can do for other magazines. The time is coming when, if MGs are to grow, i need to be reaching larger audiences. EGG has never hit much more than 70 people. That is a small audience when compared to MWANs 600, or a glossy magazines thousands.

I guess EGG was always meant to be directed towards a very select audience. I wanted to reach people who my wife calls "opinion leaders". That was clearly one of my goals. For the first three years I just wanted to expose 100 people to the MG idea. For the last year to year and a half, I've been working on having 1000 people play an MG by 1995 or 96. I expect that can be reached. And once it is, MGs will be fully grown and out of my hands.

If someone else wants to run EGG, I'd be glad to pass it on to them. You can have all the back issues I have cluttering up my selves! I will still be writing, in fact you may see a lot of me in MWAN, NUGGET, Lone Warrior, and probably the glossies as well.
