A Milestone in Matrix Gaming

No Direct Contact

by Chris Engle

Matrix Games passed a milestone in NUGGET 76 (the last one out at the time of writing). Derek Henderson wrote an article on MGs and how he has seen them in use in miniatures and role play games over in England. The mile stone is that I have never had any direct contact with Derek! He had read my articles (and been confused by them) and then played in games run by people I do correspond with. He clearly "gets it" and has some great ideas about how to apply MGs in ways I had not even considered. To my thinking this is great.

The first stage of selling a new idea depends on direct contact between the creator and the people he directly communicates to. I've been doing this with MGs for the last 5 years. The next stage of growth occurs when those who have picked up the idea directly, introduce it to a wider second layer of players who pick it up and alter it to fit their needs. Derek's article shows that this is beginning to happen.

The next stage, if it happens at all, is when a third layer of gamers pick up the idea and begin using without any knowledge of where it came from. I hope that the day come when I will see MGs at conventions where the referees have not idea that I came up with the concept. At that point the idea is no longer mine, it belongs to anyone who come up with a way to use it!
