Burnout and Rebound

by Chris Engle

Welcome to EGG 19. I've been having some of that wargamer burnout over the last few months, what with publishing Campaign in a Day, and getting ready for this year's convention season. This issue In particular was a long time in coming. Rather than write, I did a lot of painting. The good part of that is that I now have the Colonial Cav my games have been missing as well as the figs to do Chinese colonial battles. At the same time I painted some pirates who look a lot like Parisian San Culottes. They will show up later this summer when I run the French Revolution PBM game as a face to face game at Peninsula Campaigns in Kalamazoo Michigan. I have more Chinese, North American Indians, Afghan infantry, more pirates, Conquistadors, thousands of plastics, and a few fantasy figures to go. So of course I'm thinking about what other period of figure I can get into!

The nice thing about taking it a little slower is that that is usually when new ideas start coming into my head. That really seems to be the dilemma isn't it. Howard Whitehouse says it in his letter. He is doing several projects all at once so as to decrease the likelihood of completing any of them. It took a hell of a lot of work to create, write, proof read, and produce Campaign In a Day. It was worth it, but I can see why companies don't turn out new games as fast as new ideas come along. It takes time. It just takes time.

I'm glad I'm back to the first stage again. The excitement of initial creation is always more fun than the grind of production. Production takes discipline, and willingness to let go of possible changes that might be neat but which needlessly complicate. That Is not a very easy or a very fun thing to do. It's just work.

Terri and I are still planning to move in August. As of yet I don't know where. So until I know, I can still be reached at ...
