What Have I Been Doing?

Movies, Books, and Magazines

Movies

"The Mahabharata" : Public TV recently ran this six hour play rendition of this classical Hindu story. The story is to Hindu civilization what the Iliad is to the West. The basic plot is about the rivalry between two sets of cousins (one good, one bad) over who will be king. The good guys end up getting banished for 13 years, but since the God Krishna is on their side you know they will win. The last two hours of the show relates the battle between the two sides. This is an excellent view of the mental world behind ancient chariot warriors and is just is pertinent to war today as it was 3000 years ago, I strongly recommend it for its military aspects and my wife has told me to add that she liked it too. See it if you can.

Books

"Fabled Cities, Princes, and Jinn from Arab Myths and Legends" by Khairat Al-Saleh, 1985, Schocken Books. This is a children's book of myths from Arabia. Given the fact that we just fought a war over there, it is interesting to see how these people think. Democracy does not seem to fit this world view. One idea stands out -- the Middle East is the part of the world where the institution of Kingship was founded. Obedience to the King (and God) is of vital importance. If you want to learn more about Arab culture reading a children's book like this is not a bad way to do it.

Magazines

"Midwest Wargamers Association Newsletter" vo19 no4 march/april 91. Hal Thinglum, 22554 Pleasant Dr, Richton Park, IL, 60471. $20 subscription. This is MWAN's fiftieth issue! All that in only nine years. One thing Hal has been doing in the last few years is to acknowledge "men on horseback" of the hobby. I believe Hal is one of these men, and that he is so honored by us. his fellow gamers. One item of special note in this issue is an announcement for sets of rules for a special "rules" issue of MWAN. Send submissions to Richard Brooks, PO Box 718, Swansea, SC 29160. The more articles that are sent in the more volumes of rules that will be printed!
