General Jean Regnault in "Les Aigles Imprriales, 1804-1815" relates, P. 174 a little known fact on the capture of the flags of the Austrian Chevau-Legers O'Reilly by the Russian army during the tragic campaign of Russia in 1812: "On 20 September 1812, the Russian General Lambert crossing over the river Styr during the night, had taken the Regiment of Chevau-Legers O'Reilly of Schwartzenberg's Austrian Corps, capturing its 3 Standards, given to the Regiment by the Empress Maria-Theresa. But the Tsar, to whom they were given, sent them back to the Austrian Emperor, asking him to keep a mutual secret on that matter, mentionning that the courier did not know what he had carried. On 1 December 1812, Metternich sent in the name of his master a thank you note on these trophies "captured by valor and sent back by friendship".
