Identification of Figures
in "Arms and Uniforms"

by Tom Devoe

On page 3 of issue #3 I stated that I had some data concerning several errors in identification of figures in "Arms and Uniforms, the Napoleonic Wars" by Fred and Liliane Funcken. Members please note the following in your copies of the above.

In Volume II, pages 108 and 109, dealing with the Italian Army. Figure 1 should read GRENADIER OF THE GUARD. This is the uniform of the newly formed Garde-Grenadier when Viceroy Eugene first took over. It is the same figure as #6.
Figure 2 is the Chasseur of the Guard, not a Velite, otherwise
Figure 3 both are correct.
Figure 4 is the Velite Grenadier of the Guard (reversed colors of the grenadier).
Figure 5 is the Velite Carabinerr of the Guard (The Carabineer of the Guard, counterpart of
the French Chasseur A Pied de la Garde, is not shown but is #5 with reversed colors).

DOCUMENTATION: Letters from Fred H. Vietmeyer dated September 1st, 1975 and an earlier one dated June 10th, 1975.

I. Again in Volume II, this time pages 22 and 23.
Figure 2 (Tirailleur-Chasseur should be dated 1809, while figure 3 is the same unit after December 30th, 1810, and should be titled Voltigeur.)

DOCUMENTATION: Letter from Fred H. Vietmayer, dated June 10th, 1975.

II. Volume II, Pages 72-75. WURTTEMBURG ROYAL CAVALRY

Figures 2 and 3 should be reversed on page 75. When the entire unit rode together, they wore the blue uniform of page 75, figure 2. When they rode as separate units, they wore their parade uniform, except circa 1809, the uniform for the Guides (Chasseurs-Leibjager-depending upon language or date) changed from 75:1 to 73:10.

DOCUMENTATION: Letter from Fred H. Vietmeyer, dated November 12th, 1974. Tritt Post Card 19158 series IV-Nr. 19150-19173.
