How to Raise a Wesphalian Army
Part 1

by Mike Gilbert

I've been asked this question by a number of readers and I rush to answer.

First, a good basic print source is the Von Pivka book, Napoleonic German Allies: Westphalia and Cleve-Berg. This will give you a good place to start since Von Pivka goes back to decent sources.

As for figures: In 15mm you have an infinite choice - Minifigs French infantry offer the best. Of course, you have to paint the epaullets on the fusiliers.

French carabineers are used for curaissiers, and French line lancers for the guard lancers (I make side plumes for the helmets for both) Hussars are identical with the French, as are the artillerists (use line horse for the guard). (Many Heritage Napoleonettes are also suitable, but not line infantry or old guard.)

In 25mm, there is really no choice but Mlnifigs since no one else makes a full line of figures - It's just lucky that Minifigs are such good figures.

In short, a Westphalian army is one of the easiest to build from a division to a corps and it looks good too, from the white and blue uniforms to the old co loured facings.
