Editorially Speaking

In Memory

by Jean A. Lochet (Mr.)

Our last issue # 57 was late. The original "Master Copy" was delayed by the postal strike in Canada and the "Spare Master Copy" had to be sent to Canada for printing, then, the printed copies transported to the U.S. for mailing...Simple is not?

This issue, unless some new event takes place, should be on time. It is a very unusual issue in many ways for several reasons. It has been the most difficult issue for me to put together, because of the tragic death of my 16-year-old daughter, Martine, killed in an automobile accident while vacationing in my family in France. Martine was a very unusual young lady. She had managed the very difficult task of being our friend as well as our daughter. Martine was a very bright girl. She was fluent in French and pretty good in Spanish. She was planning to become an international lawyer and was very interested in history as well as art, dance, music etc.. I remember the day, when, at the Princeton University Library, she found a book on Napoleon and Josephine. She was planning to write an article for us on that subject. We miss her smile, her joy, her support, her love...Why did she had to go is one of the great mystery of Life...We dedicate this issue to her memory...She was so much fun and so much help

Yet, life must go on...I know that she would not llke to see it any other way.

We have some 15 pages dedicated to the battle of Maida. We are very proud of presenting the dispatch (or whatever) of General Reynier to Joseph Napoleon, the King of Naples. A piece of data that Oman claimed was never published (providing only one dispatch exists). It is to be found pages 2 and 5.

The regular sections that we had to delete in this issue will be found in our next issue to be pubhshed in October.

This issue of EMPIRES, EAGLES & LIONS is dedicated to my daughter Martine ( 25 March 1965- 27 July 1981).

MEMORIES

Your first spoon, little socks, that special teddy bear,
all kept in memory of those first innocent months.
Your toy, kindegarten picture, jumping rope
all in memory of carefree and learning years.

Your books, faded photos, presed flowers,
all as a memory of fun filled days.
Old compositions, report cards, book reports,
all in remembnance of sleepless nights.

Yellowed wedding dress, wrinkled napkin, old bouquets,
in memory of that Special Day.

Her first spoon, little socks, that special teddy bear,
all kept in memory of her first innocent months.
her toy, kindegarten picture...
