Happenings

NJAW News 1976

by Thomas E. DeVoe

Recently I received a cassette tape from our Polish expert Jon Harrison which contained not only French Napoleonic marches, but also Polish marches composed during the campaigns in Italy. These were recorded from records in Jon's collections. He states in his letter that the French recording is about twenty years old, while the Polish record is three.

From Greg Novak, our most active Illinois member, came a complimentary copy of his soon to be published new skirmisher rules, which are most detailed and thorough including movement, training, even types of weapons. A copy of these has been filed with Jean for the club files but additional copies are available from Greg by writing him at 1858" Valley Road, Champaign, Illinois, 61820. Many interesting ideas are developing in Greg's mind. For example, Greg is also-Editor of MIERDE, the newsletter for the Wessex Campaign Game, and the unofficial newsletter of "Captain John Paul Schott's Independent Company of the Pennsylvania", with a total strength of 2.

A few weeks ago, Dick Ponsini and I had the opportunity of visiting the Soldier Show in New York City. Besides being an extremely small shop, (their catalog is bigger), the biggest surprise I got was in looking over the few ( maybe thirty) back issues of "TRADITION" magazine. Price per issue is now 6.00. So hold on to those issues. Since only 76 issues were published, and as many of us have a few, I thought that perhaps we could have all members inform us of what numbers they have.. This would certainly help in research. For example recently Dick Ponsin was seeking a specific issue to finish an article Le has been working on dealing with moral. He finally found it in Grenadier Shop. So if you have them, please let us know the number so that a master list can be prepared.

While we were in the neighborhood, Dick and I stopped by the Metropolitan Museum of Art to view a display entitled "The Arts Under Napoleon". To our disappointed it was closed for the day. We then journeyed on to Sky Books and spent a while looking at their selection. I never realized just how many magazines there were devoted to wargaming, unfortunately not all of them good.

This summer the DeVoe and Ponsini Families will be traveling to Canada, and visiting several sites of the War of 1812 and hopefully meeting with our War of 1812 Consultant Don Graves. From this we hope to have several new article and additional Park Folders for future editions of the Journal.
