Many things have been written about the Old Guard. One question always come back. How could one get in it? In 1807, the requirements were as it follows. Each infantry regiment had to make a list of 10 non-commissioned officers and soldiers as candidates to the Guard. They had to have at least five of active service and two campaigns. Half of them must be at least 1.76 meter (5 feet 9 in.) and the other half not less than 1.7 meter (5 ft. 8 in.) The mean age is about 35; Very few are less than 30 and many are over 40. The drawing shows two grenadiers of the second regiment relaxing in camp with letters from home. The drawing is by Jeanette Danel.
