by Jean A. Lochet (Mr.)
At the beginning of the year I was complaining about the lack of material on hand for publication. I called for help. Help I got. I have received many articles from "Old" and new contributors. For the first time in a long time, I have several articles I have to hold until the next issue or until they fit the general major topic of a given issue. That is including some of my own. The same applies to cover drawings which are, by the way, always printed in offset. This month cover is a drawing of the standard of the 1st Battalion of the Polish Legion. I think that standard was of in interest since this month we are publishing the last part of the series on the Polish Legions in Italy by Jon Harrison. I had also to redraw all the flags for this last article since the drawings provided were apparently copies of copies and could not be reproduced. Too bad we could not afford to print them in offset. The quality would have been much better. I hope that, in the near future, all the magazine will be published in offset but for that we need more new subscribers. Everyone can help and speak about EMPIRES, EAGLES AND LIONS to a friend who may be interested. We'll be glad to send a complimentary copy at anyone's request. We should say once more that this magazine is everyone's magazine. It is an open forum. We want articles to compliment the articles published. Please do not hesitate to disagree and to send articles that include contradictory data and references. We'll publish any courteous, well researched, well written article with substantiated facts and references from authoritative sources. We have had several instances in which contradictory references were presented. We still have some unsettled cases in our hands like "What happened at Genappes". Again we are interested in the truth. Many of my articles are a call for help. I think that everyone of us has the duty to present the truth here. None of us made the history of the Napoleonic period. We can only quote what historians report, alas not always with "accuracy". It is sometimes quite a job to extricate the truth .... Once more, I am pleased to see that the open forum concept works. We have in this issue some interesting comments from new contributors like Mr. Schneider and Mr. Novak. Mr. Novak gives us some . valuable information and data on "practical musket fire". Mr. Schneider has a second article awaiting publication in our next issue in which he does not agree with my last article on remanning guns with nonspecialists. Well, I think it's enough for this issue. We hope you'll like it.
