Notes From Don Graves

Sappers

by Don Graves

During the Napoleonic period in British service, a sapper was a member of the Royal Corps of Sappers and Miners whose primary task was the erection of fortifications. The French term sapeur is equivalent (at this time) to the British term pioneer or regimental soldier whose task was to clear obstructions. A A quick glance through my records shows that no Fencible regiment was authorized pioneers, but then, since I am not sure of official British practice at this time, I don't know how to advise you. If it is a matter of wargaming, I would say let Fencible regiments appoint pioneers as almost all inhabitants of Canada at this time were capable of handling an axe.
