Transition

We have the pleasure to present the first issue of EMPIRES, EAGLES AND LIONS, which is nothing but the logical evolution of NEW JAW NEWS. NEW JAW NEWS was originally intended to be only a club newsletter, but has grown to something more than that in about a year time. A more suitable tittle was necessary and we have simply decided in the favor of EMPIRES, EAGLES AND LIONS. The eagle is found in the "arms" of many nations of the Napoleonic era such as Austria, France, Prussia and Russia. The lion can stand for England and the valoroug heros and soldiers of all involved countries.

EMPIRES, EAGLES AND LIONS is intended to be a magazine dedicated to Napoleonic period wargaming. It is made and prepared by unpaid and dedicated volunteers. Occasional articles on other periods may be published from time to time but only when of interest to most of us. Such articles will be published only if space is available and priority will be given to Napoleonic matters.

We need articles to keep going in publishing. We would like to have as many authors as possible to enlarge our scope. It has been always our policy to publish everybody's point of view even when in contradiction with our. However, we ask for the articles to be courteous at the very least. We would like to see the articles well documented and to include as much as possible the specific references used to draw a conclusion. Too many times we see statements that are not substantiated by facts or references. In the future we may ask for references to be included before the publication of an article. In other words we would like to see more than a personal Interpretation or point of view. I may be an extreme case with my consistent usage of sometimes very extensive quotations from authoritative and pertinent sources. But I believe that gives more weight to the pertinency of articles. Of course, if my references are wrong, I am wrong. To show the pertinency of my point let me quote Ray Johnson in his article in NJN # 18, page 23:

"First, I would like to express my admiration of the depth and wide range of your format. In particular I am impressed with the use of source references which accompany your material; this add a great deal to its significance."

I think that speaks for itself.

Furthermore, we won't be able to accept "straight" copies of articles or books. The reason is simple: copyrights. One can make quotations from a book or article but may not copy entire articles etc.

We would like to see more comments and even disagreements on the articles and point of view presented here. Don't tell me you don't have the time. Tell me that you are not willing to take the time or are not interested. Don't be afraid to disagree with someone. That does not mean you don't respect his point of view. Dick Ponsini was not afraid to write on the subject of remanning artillery. We are still friends and we'll remain friends as long as we remain courteous, objective, non- emotional and keep in consideration all the presented data and articles on that matter. Controversy is an essential ingredient of progress. The purpose of EMPIRES, EAGLES AND LIONS is to provide a forum for the exchange of data, ideas etc. on the Napoleonic period. Let us join hands and have a great time together.
