David Chandler

A Tribute

It has come to our attention that David Chandler recently suffered a heart attack and stroke. While he is no longer in immediate danger, it appears that he is in for a long recovery. It is a terrible shame that so soon after his retirement from Sandhurst and with the great anticipation of his being able to go out in the field for original source research that he should be so struck down.

Professor Chandler has more than any living historian been responsible for helping to popularize Napoleonic history. He has had more than twenty five books published, most still in print because of their continued popularity. His Campaigns of Napoleon is still the accepted starting point when one wishes to begin to learn about "History's Greatest Captain". Further he has greatly furthered a cause which we hold dear to our hearts; that is battlefield touring and preservation. David has lead many tours and written a book which covers the touring of battlefields today.

We were to meet with David, and going to have the pleasure of finally getting some extended time with him, when he visited Chicago for the Napoleonic Society meeting this September; so his stroke has had an imr, nediate and sad impact personally on our lives. It is with all our hopes and prayers that we wish David a speedy and full recovery. Cards and good wishes and letters can be sent to us and we will forward them.
