American War of 1812

II. Description of a Captured
US Ammunition Wagon of the War of 1812

by Gary G. Ernest

During the summer of 1988, Parks Canada had on loan to Sacket Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site, the body of an American artillery ammunition wagon, which dated between 1810 and 1812. The box measured 120" long, 23" wide and 24" high.

The box had a rounded top and the sides were secured by two inch iron straps in four places. The stripes were bolted through the wood sides. The interior showed where partitions were in place to separate the fixed rounds. The box was dark grey (repainted) in color and had US ART'Y NO 1 painted in dark red on the side. No supporting springs or wheels are known to exist.

Editor's note: Gary is the historic site Manager II at Sacket Harbor.
