With his left hand holding the bible and with his right hand resting on his unsheathed sword. this most English of all Englishmen stands for ever steadfast and unvanquishcd. As he sternly surveys the passersby, his commanding presence recalls the puritan lover of wine and music, the practical mystic. the inspired leader, devotedly served by Milton and Marvell. It recalls the stubborn patriot firmly rooted in hisfertile fenland acres, reluctantly accepting his destiny, becoming the dominant figure of his age. It recalls a triumph of Englishness; a man intuitively just and reasonable, yet relentless in defending liberty of conscience, parliamentary institutions and his nation's interests.
