Pikes and Sneyd

Only enough room for a couple this issue but keep them coming.

Queries

191: Pike Construction Philip Collman

Does anyone have references to:

    1. How the wood for pikes was obtained? (i.e. wether the ash was coppiced or split out).

    2. How the pikes were actually made? (turned, planed or whatever)

    3. Measurements of period pikes, (aren't they double tapered?)

Replies

Ralph Sneyd

Further to the query on Ralph Sneyd/Snead in 'the' first issue of the English Civil War Times may I add the following.

The Sneyd family used to live on their estate up until the early 20th century at the village of Keele to the west of Newcastle - Under Lyme. The current Keele Hall, of Victorian origin, is now part of the University of Keele. The University Library contains a recent Master of Arts Dissertion on the Sneyd Family with a good chapter on their exploits during the Civil war. Sadly I can't remember the author's name but a request to the Library should uncover the details required.
