Sir Philip Skippon

Large Back Cover (80K)

painting by Richard Hook

Richard Hook's reconstruction,(vn the back cover), shows Skippon, as Sergent-Major General of the New Model-Army at the battle of Naseby 14th of June 1645. Four contempory engravings of Skippon survive, all dating from around 1646 - 47; in each the features illustrated are all so similar that they are clearly based on a common original portrait. Three of the engravings show skippon in the lighter ar-our worn on campaign, the forth in heavy cuirassier armour rarely worn in the field but often depicted in portraits as a link with the knightly past. At Nasby Skippon was shot in the right side at close range by a Royalist musketeer, the bullet 'pierced bid artwur and body quite through', leaving five or dLx incheo between the hole it madegoing in and coming out'. Despite this he remained in the saddle, encouraging his infantry, until they had rallied and beaten back their Royalist opponents.

At Naseby, 1645.
