Cost of Drums and Colours


The following letter from John Sampson in London, dated September 19th, 1644, is taken from THE LETTER BOOKS OF SIR SAMUEL LUKE 1644-45. (HMSO 1963)

Yours of the 10th and 15th I received and according to your order per the first, I now send 6 drums: cost œ8 11s. Paid for painting 2 of the drums, 19s more. Now sent 4 colours with all things thereto belonging, cost all one with the other œ3 per colour, is the sum of œ12.

According to your order per your last letter have bespoke for the leading-stave, partizsans and halberds but it will be Monday next before they can be got ready. I herewith send you the escutcheon from Mr. Taylor - cost 3s.
