A Royalist Cromwell

In addition to Col Henry Cromwell and his son James there was also a Col Thomas Cromwell (R) ex-Army in Ireland. He was cousin of Oliver (Lord Protector) and brother of Philip (P) K. Bristol, 1645. They were the sons of Sir Philip Cromwell of Biggin House. Their brother, also Oliver (P), served in Ireland and England. (T Carlyle-Introduction to OC's Letters and Speeches)

This may be the same man as MAJOR THOMAS CROMWELL, Prisoner in Nantwich - who was captured at Malpas 25.8.44 - who appears several times in Brereton's Letter Books. Thomas Cromwell of Staunton Magna, Hunts, was a cousin of Oliver (Lord Protector) and an officer in the D. of York's regt of horse.' (BLB P85, fn 1) His parole document 11.5.45 was witnessed by Ma) Wm Maxey of Lucas' Horse (also PW. Malpas) and Rich. Barrett chirurgeon-general.

BLB ed. R N Dore, VOL I, p409, item 504 is a summary of a pass Brereton issued to Cromwell "a weak and infirm man" on 12.5.45 to journey with his servant, Gilbert Tan into Huntingdonshire "for the benefit of his natural air and the perfecting of his care, and from there to London and to return without molestation or trouble".
