Firing ECW Muskets
From The Hip

by Hawk Norton

He has long since thrown away the Rest for his musket, prefering instead to fire it from the hip, a practise which, to judge from Lt.Col. Elton's remark in 1649, was quite widespread:

"Thirdly, that the souldiers present and give fire upon their Rests, not using that slovenly posture of popping their Match into the Pan, their Muskets being on their left sides, which is not only hurtful unto themselves, but much endangers their fellow Souldiers, and by so doing, they scarce or ever do any execution against an enemy."
