As part of the Convention of Al Arish, General Kleber requested the return of the widow of a French sergeant, who had died fighting the Grand Vezir's forces in the recent defense of Al Arish. The Grand Vezir remembered the French beauty who he had given as a gift to the Pasha of Jerusalem. The Grand Vezir immediately sent for her, but she refused to come. Instead, she send a letter thanking Kleber for his concern, but declaring that she did not wish to be rescued as she found herself extremely well off, and very handsomely used by the Pasha. She said she was resolved to remain where she was. In later years she would become a protector of the Christian establishments in Syria and would prove of service to the British consulate.
