Ottoman Military Music

By William E. Johnson

The unique character of Ottoman society created a musical culture which spread throughout much of Eastern Europe and the Arabic-speaking world. A special sub-set of this musical tradition was the military music of the Janissaries.

You can now experience this music first-hand. From Andy Birtle of Alexandria, VA, comes word of two music CDs:

The Janissaries (Ethnic Label - B 6738) which is performed by the Turkish Army Band, and Turkish Military Band Music of the Ottoman Empire (World Music Library CD, by King Record Company - KICC 5101).

If you can't find them in your local music store, Andy says they should both be available through Emperor's Headquarters, 5744 West Irving Park Road, Chicago, IL 60634.

It sounds like this just might be the perfect musical touch to get you in the mood to paint up your Ottoman army, or to serve as a bit of background music for your next battle.
