Please note that we hold a Vanguard
club meeting at Lord Al's every third
Saturday of the month and this is a report on
the game held there. Bob Moon set up the Cedar Mountain scenario from the eastern battles book; unfortunately my copy is still packed, so I won't be able to give brigade names. Bob has an interesting way of putting down terrain, he has different types of woodland scenic ground effects in old parmesean bottles, and sprinkles it down to show roads and fields, Bob always sets up a good looking table. It is very effective. I had the two brigades on the Confederate right, Maj. Bill - the overall rebel commander - gave the order for an all out attack. Both my brigades advanced, but the only other movement I noticed was the Union right. but I continued anyway. I tried to support Jeff, but 3 ones rolled on consecutive turns for movement just doesn't cut it in F&F-mb. By turn two Glen had knock back the Confederate left, and managed to occupy their ridgeline for the rest of the battle, dispite the efforts of Maj. Bill and Evan. After two turns of receiving Union artillery fire my left (and only elite brigade) was disordered, it rallied but failed to charge, my other brigade slammed in to the Union line alone. It drove its opponent brigade back, but failed to reach another target on breakthrough. Scot moved a brigade to the flank of my elite unit, turned the remaining brigade in the line I just broke through around, and closed on the rear of my other unit. He dismountd a cavalry unit in front of that brigade. He charged the flank of the elite brigade, and front and rear of my other brigade. All assaults were repelled! My elite brigade rallied, and charged into the rear of a Union brigade, while my other unit charged the dismounted cavalry. My artillery managed to whittle down the brigade that had flanked mine. The elite brigade swept through his opposition, and joined in on the assualt on the new Union line, which was blown out in short order. With a single new brigade, the remains of what I had already fought and three guns the Union formed a new line. My next forlorn assault reduced my elite bde to spent, and other to worn. Scot had stopped me just short of the bridge, preventing my from cutting off the Union's sole means of retreat. and securing an overwhelming Southern victory at Cedar Mountain, instead the game ended in a Union victory. 2. Scott Jackson had set up a Zulus vs. Boers for late comers. and when last seen his and Andy's Zulus had Scot Bishop's Boers hard pressed in their laager. Lord knows what the heathens did to Mr. Bishop's lads it they got over the wall, but Mr Bishop probably enjoyed it 3. For the real late comers Mark set UP a DBA game, out of respect for a certain individual I won't discuss what I observed of that game. I too was watching and needless to say Al Gaiser was stricken with his usual dice. I guess he didn't pray hard enough to that Chinese god of wargaming, Yu-Whan- Ah-Six. -mb Back to Dispatch Feb. 99 Table of Contents Back to Dispatch List of Issues Back to MagWeb Master Magazine List © Copyright 1999 by HMGS Mid-South This article appears in MagWeb (Magazine Web) on the Internet World Wide Web.
