Command Decision #3
Action at Ft Campbell

Battle Report

by Grant Johnson

In a nut shell the Russian objective was the village/town #2. And They went head long at it. The initial exchange was between T34/85's and a HQ Pz V crossing an open zone. The German objective was the woods where the SU 85's were located.

The Germans set up in the villages and waited in defense. The most effective German unit was the Pz IV Co in #3 Village. He managed to stop the T34/76's and the lend lease Sherman's. No lucky breaks for the Russians on the North (Village #3). The Russian spearhead went straight for his objective only to be repulsed by morale rolls. The initial assault cost one PLT of T34/85's and cost the Germans his command Pz V, which delayed a whole bunch of his actions for a long time.

The Germans also had a PAK 40 in village #1, along with a rifle Co. It did a good job suppressing the Russians. The Russians called in a Katuruska (mrls) strike on village #1 with moderate sucess. Several hits and partials, but were unable to cause the Germans to fall back out of the village. Eventually Su 85's and MRLS fire destroyed the Ger Recon and the PAK 40 in Village #1.

The T34/76's could not get effective fire against the Pz IV's in village #3, and were whittled down to a single Platoon before the end of the game. The lend lease Shermans did an end run to flank #3 Village only to be ill timed in the face of the same Pz IV's.

The last turn of the game saw a general German assault towards the Su 85 position Spearheaded by the now active Pz V's and two rifle Co's. The Germans laid smoke, in front of the SU 85 position, and positioned their forces, for a close fire exchange. The Russians did not wait for the smoke to clear and moved into firing range under the cover of smoke. When the smoke cleared, and the fires done the Su 85 were reduce to a single Battery. Two T34/85 platoon's survived, but the Russians had to pull back! The Germans lost two Pz V platoons and a Pz IV platoon and some infantry. The German close support assualt of the Russians helped secure the objective! A great game, and a whole lot of dead Russians and a well bloodied German units for a few key peices of terrain.

Jamie Gentry called the game and did the victory conditions, and the Germans were able to do a 4-0 win. It was a lot of Fun (I would of loved to re-play the same game with Spearhead simply to see if the results were the same)! It was the Clarksville boys first look at Command Decision #3, so the rules were still in the learning stages, but fun was had by all.
