A Notice From Dick Bryant
On the 27th of January 2005 I received the following document by e-mail from Dick Bryant as one of the staff of THE COURIER-for 25 years or so, more If you count “The Old Courier” (roughly 1969-78) the major North American historical miniatures gaming magazine. In fact, THE COURIER was a major factor in the founding and early growth of HMGS. The swallowing of both MWAN and THE COURIER (see below) into a single publication is a momentous event in our hobby. It represents a tremendous opportunity and a corresponding risk. Much of it depending on the decisions of Don Perrin (also President of GAMA), Mike Cosentino (also on the HMGS EAST BOD) and Kathryn Plambeck. --Pat Condray Editors and authors of The Courier Magazine Issue #92 of the Courier was due out in October of last year. After several major computer crashes that required my re- building of many of the articles to be used in that issue and a bout of both the Flu and of Pneumonia, I realize that at 71, I am no longer able to put in the effort that is required to get The Courier out in a timely manner. Dick Bryant addresses the SCRUBY Award Banquet at HISTORICON 03 The new owners of MWAN, Don Perrin , Mike Cosentino, et al of Legio X, contacted me about possible sale of the magazine. The offer came at the right time. So in return for their honoring the outstanding subscriptions, bulk orders, pre-paid and contracted advertising, Legio-X now has all rights to The Courier Magazine. The next issue of MWAN (But under a new name) will combine articles from The Courier and MWAN in one 80 page, 8 x 10 glossy full color magazine. The articles from The Courier will be those that were going to be in #91. I believe that this company has the resources to bring out a magazine in the format that we at The Courier have been striving for all these years. The new magazine will need you, our special editors, to continue to provide them with the quality, thoughtful articles that you have always provided to The Courier and I ask that you stand by them in this regard. The new magazine will honor the subscription commitments to the editors and to authors as The Courier has. I want to thank you all for the great help and friendship you have accorded me over the years and I hope that you will all stay in touch and that I at least see you across the table at various conventions in the future. I will try to answer any questions you may have by e-mail at mgluteus@aol.com, but you should contact Don Perrin at info@legio-x-inc.com. Most Sincerely, Dick Bryant How Long Has It Been? The following correspondence appeared in Volume II No3 of The Armchair General, Letters to the Editor (Dispatches from the Field) in 1969.
Ed. Hardly boring, since a bad break on the die could have put me out of the town with one regiment and a battalion of chasseurs flat-footed in the open. I rather expected to be caught in that spot. If business brings me to Massachusetts, I'll take my chances on that reign of terror you have lined up. Readers, by the way, may be interested in the fact that Dick has taken ever editorship at The New England Wargame Club Newsletter, now entitled the Courier, and the club plans to go national. if you are interested in subscribing to the Courier, and/or are planning to be in the New England area looking for trouble on the table top Dick is the man to contact.
