Hi I am sending this message to let you know that one of our members has passed, could you put a note in the next issue to inform those in our group who knew him the news of his passing ARSENEAULT, DR. CARL J., CPT, AUS (RETIRED) - age 52, a beloved husband, a loving son and brother, passed away on his birthday, December 20, 2004, at his parents' home, in Knoxville, after a courageous battle with stage IV colon cancer. He was a member of John XXIII Catholic Center University of Tennessee. After being diagnosed in February 2003, he remained positive and upbeat throughout his treatment which included several major operations and multiple chemotherapy sessions. Born December 20, 1952 at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Great Lakes, IL, as the first child of LCDR Arthur J. Arseneault, Jr., USN, (Retired) and LTJG Willidean Blazier Arseneault, RN, USN of Knoxville, TN. Growing up in Smyrna, Georgia, Carl graduated from the University of Georgia, Athens with a BA in Political Science. In 1973, he was commissioned as a 2LT in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1985 as a CPT. After his service in the Army, he enrolled at UT Knoxville and received his PhD in English in 1996. Then an instructor at UT for several years, he thoroughly enjoyed his teaching assignments, especially his technical writing classes. Carl was a member of the Knights of Columbus receiving the Honor of the 4th Degree. A perpetual member of the Military Order of the World Wars, Carl was an ardent war gamer who spent many Friday evenings gaming with friends. Carl and his wife Gabriele, of 21 years, lived with their two dogs Watsonla and Baerle in Germany close to Ramstein Air Base and Landstuhl Army Regional Medical Center. In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by: his younger siblings, LCDR, Daniel, USN,(Retired) of Marietta, GA; CAPT. Nanette, RN, USPHS, IR. of Knoxville, 2LT Suzanne Keith, RN, AUS. of Charleston, SC, MMCM David, USN, of Virginia Beach, VA, Stephen of Orlando, FL and Michelle Baumgarten of Port St. Lucie, FL and their individual families. Carl will be sorely missed by his extensive family and a host of friends. A graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Tennessee State Veterans' Cemetery with Father Eric Andrews officiating with full military honors presented by Volunteer State Veterans' Honor Guard. A memorial mass will be held 2:30 p.m. Thursday at John XXIII Catholic Center, UT campus. Family request that memorial may be made to American Cancer Society-East Region Office, 871 Weisgarber Road, Knoxville, TN 37909. The family will receive friends between 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
