GM Master Checklist

Tips

by Tom Bryant

1. RULES AND SCENARIO SPECIFIC MATERIALS

Tables, Charts, Maps, or Data Sheets for at least 1.2X the MAXIMUM number of players I expect. That should cover any damaged, lost, stolen or mislaid information packs. Also I try as much as possible to format these into "Data Packs" for each player, or at least to have multiple packs per side.

Scenario notes and information specific to each side including NECESSAJbackground for the scenario objectives, victory conditions etc

Army or Fleet lists or data necessary for each side. Preferably this is broken down by command so each player can get some stuff to work with right off the bat.

Markers, chits, beads, etc needed for the game system

Hobby general information etc.

2. STATIONARY AND PAPER PRODUCTS

Notepads for players to exchange messages on or write down information

At least one 8.5" x 11" notebook to record scenario information and battle reports as well as other misc. things.

Pencils:
Standard pencils with small manual pencil sharpener and a few extra erasers
Mechanical pencils with spare erasers and leads

Pens:
Cheap ink pens. Bic or Biro clones are fine, multiple colors if desired.
Felt Tip pens or markers: These can be Flair type pens or clones. Again multiple colors if desired
Sharpie Permanent pens in standard and fine points for Emergency repairs or quick sign making

Fasteners:
Paper Clips, large and small, flat and binder type
Rubber Bands, variety of sizes. Particularly larger sizes.

Clip Boards. The number varies as to the scenario and need for players to write down information on data sheets or logs

Scotch Tape, Drafting or Masking tape and the old fashioned Duct tape.

3. MEASUREMENT AND RANGING DEVICES:

Tape Measures
A few 6" and 12" rulers
Laser Pointers: Three or four of these should be sufficient
String lines for other LOS measurements
A few small home made periscopes for LOS checks

IV. MODEL AND TERRAIN REPAIR

Glue and remover:
Super Glue (Cyanoacrylate)
Nail Polish Remover (Acetone) for Super Glue in a small bottle
Plastic model cement or Duco Cement
White (PVA) glue
SMALL tubes of epoxy for repairs

Folded up wax paper and newspaper in enough quantify to cover a small work space while repairing figures or terrain. (Note this is for "post action repairs"

Flocking and Ballast

Small bottles of paints in necessary colors for touch up work on terrain and minis (This item is optional)

5. MINIATURES:

Miniatures in safe storage. preferably broken down by side, unit, etc. order. All miniatures necessary to run the planned scenario as well as possible optional scenarios if need be.

Spare stands for damaged minis.

Special casualty, rout, rally stands or markers not included above

6. TERRAIN:

Terrain boards or ground cloths. These should be stored as compactly and neatly as possible for ease of loading, unloading and transport.
Hills See Above if necessary
Roads, rivers, paths, etc. Store as neatly and compactly as possible.
Bridges, Buildings, Walls, Forts, Trenches etc. Protect as best as possible from damage while in transit. Pack as neatly and compactly as possible. Bring only essential pieces.

Trees, hedges, shrubs, etc. Again bring only essential bits and pieces.

If you can get by with a few densely placed trees and a "Heavy Woods" mat to mark such regions so much the better. It will save set up, tear down and your sanity.

Rough scale map for your own use to layout the table.

7. SMALL TOOL KIT:

Exacto Knife with various blades
Multi tool with pliers, knife etc.
Small jack knife
Various lengths and diameters of wire
Pin Vise with small drill bits

8. FIRST AID KIT
Band Aids
gauze pads
small roll of medical tape
Alcohol swabs
Moist towelettes
Small bottles or tabs of Aspirin, lbuprofen, Tylenol or other pain relievers
Antihistamines and Allergy Sinus medication (A must for me)
Rolaids, Turns or other antacid products

GM copies of ALL players scenario specific notes including historical information given to both sides.
Copies of all necessary Maps, charts, data tables etc.
COPY OF THE RULES (PLEASE NOTE: RELATED SUPPLEMENTS MAY BE BROUGHT. HOWEVER FOR LARGER VOLUMES IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU PARE DOWN MATERIAL TO ESSENTIAL SECTIONS ONLY.
GM refreshments and "emergency rations" such as chewing gum, mints, granola or energy bars, beef jerky, and perhaps a bottle of water or pop.

Last Point

One last point on all this make a "Load/Unload" checklist for the stuff you are going to be putting on the table. It will make your life a lot easier and you can track what is going on better and know you have everything in its place.
