Conventions

by Maj. Bill Harting

I was unable to make it up to Historicon this year and apparently it was quite a good show. I want to publicly thank the East Board of Directors for the plaque and all of the nice words. I feel very honored by this recognition.

Well I see that other conventions have their scheduling problems as well as we. Not that I wish anybody any ill, but we have had our share of problems, as apparently so do others. It appears that NASCAR and the Brickyard 400 has completely rolled over GENCON, which as a consequence had to change dates for 2004 to 19-22 August, still in Indianapolis. Not that they lost their facility but there would be no rooms in town not taken by race enthusiasts had they remained at their old date.

While on the subject of conventions, planning is progressing on NASHCON '04. You all have to realize that one of the unstated but very important duties of HMGS is to provide you with gathering that do not disappear after one or a couple of times. This can only be done as long as we show a positive cash flow or at least a neutral one. We are a non-profit organization, but not a negative profit one. I say this because we can stand one hit like this year's Nashcon, but not two. So make your plans accordingly and support MidSouth's convention program. The next show is the Reunion, which this year is in Memphis, TN.

A note of reassurance and that is that anyone who sends in a check thinking your dues are due (ALL memberships end 31Dec of that year), your records are updated as paid for the following year (or however many ahead you pay). One advantage is that one avoids any dues increases like the one probably coming up next year (and no, it is too late to pay in advance now to avoid the increase).
