War Gaming with the
“Riverbluff Irregulars” of Memphis

By Charlie Clay

Greetings from the Western Front! The “Irregulars” continue to seek cover during the hot summer days by staying indoors and gaming. For historicals, “Warhammer Ancient Battles” in 25mm scale has been our primary interest this summer. We’ve been seeing a lot of man-to-man matches as well as larger multi-player games with several new armies having found their way to Memphis compliments of eBay, a painting service, or from our member’s paint brushes. Egyptian, Assyrian, Saracen, Norse, and Greek Hoplite armies as well as additions to the ever popular Barbarian and Roman armies have kept the dice rolling hot and the taunts flowing.

A recent trip to a “Games Workshop” Games Day in Chicago by several of our members has brought a lot of new ideas and gaming fever back into our club. There have been recent forays into the “Warhammer 40K” world with several members building forces of futuristic vehicles and infantry to do battle with. Old “Warhammer Fantasy Battle” armies are also being dusted off and spruced up for a coming round of fights, and there’s a lot of interest in Fantasy Chariot Racing that should generate a campaign of some sorts over the winter months. With “Games Workshop” soon to open their new Battle Bunker here in Memphis adjacent to their new Distribution Center, we plan to have a club presence right from the start and not only enjoy the gaming but possibly do some recruiting as well.

Remember that we are usually found at the local hobby shop “Mid-Town Toys” www.midtowntoys.com as a group on Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons, although individual members could be there gaming almost anytime the shop’s open. If you’d like to get some gaming in with us, just check on our Yahoo group forum as to what’s coming up and drop by! Say “HOWDY!”, let us know you’d like to play, and we’ll get you to pushing some lead in no time. You are also welcome to drop by our club’s website at www.rbigaming.org to find out the latest news and what’s happening in the group. Our Yahoo message forum is where most of the daily info is, and you’ll find a link to it on our site.

Plans for this year’s HMGS Mid-South Wargamer’s Re-Union are moving ahead. The event is here in Memphis this fall hosted by the “Irregulars” and will be held the weekend of Oct. 17-19. Our location is the Holiday Inn at the Mt. Moriah exit off of I-240 in the southeast part of town. We figured a location next door to “Platinum Plus” would be easy to find! The gaming schedule is shaping up nicely and will include “Pig Wars” Dark Ages, Samurai Duels, Peninsular Napoleonic, Pigmy Wars, French and Indian War, ACW Ironclads, WW II Pacific, Three Musketeers, and WW II Air War. There are also going to be two tournaments, each of 3 rounds held on Saturday. Those tournaments will be for 2000 pt. “Warhammer Ancient Battles” armies in 25mm and “Dogs of War” 25mm Modern Skirmish. We expect a few other games to be scheduled as the date approaches and travel plans are finalized by all, but it looks like a great weekend of gaming can be expected! There will be a dealer’s presence as well with local hobby stores represented and our two club member dealers, Stacy’s “Riverbluff Wargames” and JC’s “Devil Dog Designs” www.devildogdesign.com taking center stage. There will also be a day-long flea market for “bring and buy” on Saturday.

That’s all for now. Hope to see you all at RE-UNION in Memphis in October!
