War Gaming with the
“Riverbluff Irregulars” of Memphis

by Charlie Clay

Greetings from the Western Front! Please allow me to introduce our club. We “Irregulars” are an active gaming group in Memphis that have been getting together for war gaming for over 10 years now. Our games are primarily miniatures, although the occasional card game or board game does slip into the mix now and then. We’re primarily a historical gaming group, but we have been known to dabble in fantasy/science fiction games when the mood strikes us!

We have a new club web site. We can be found at www.rbigaming.org. There you’ll find a link to our Yahoo Group message forum as well as other club contact and information sites and our prized “Photo Gallery” of games.

Most of our gaming happens at the excellent gaming area offered by local hobby store MID-TOWN TOYS. The staff there is friendly, helpful, and always willing to help people find a suitable space to play, even when there are other events or tournaments going on. The gaming area features multiple gaming tables, a nice selection of shop owned terrain that is available for gamers to use, and restroom and snack machine facilities. The retail side of the store is well stocked with gaming miniatures, rules and literature, paints, and terrain. Well worth a visit when you’re in Memphis! MTT can be found on the east side of the intersection of Cooper and Young, just a few blocks west of “Liberty Land.”

Their web site is at www.midtowntoys.com and they are featured on our club’s Hobby Shop Links page.

We are usually found at MTT as a group on Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons, although individual members could be there gaming almost anytime the shop’s open. If you’d like to get some gaming in with us, just check on our Yahoo group forum as to what’s coming up and drop by! Say HOWDY, let us know you’d like to play, and we’ll get you to pushing some lead in no time.

This spring our attentions have mainly been on supporting the local and regional war gaming conventions we attend, including Memphis conventions ShadowCon in January and Mid-SouthCon in March, and NashCon in Nashville in May. We’ll also have members attending Warfair in Atlanta in June, and we are hosting this year’s HMGS MidSouth Wargamer’s Re-Union in October. Now THAT’s marching to the sound of the guns. Shame none of us are making it to HistoriCon this year!

At NashCon, we recognized two GM’s with our distinguished (at least WE think it’s distinguished!) “The Game We’d All Like to Play In” award for outstanding overall appearance, GM presentation, and gamers having a helluva good time playing in it. Those awards also included a $10 gift certificate to the DEVIL DOG DESIGNS dealer’s table (more about J.C.’s fine products shortly!). Those GM’s presented with our award for NashCon 2003 were Mike Randles for his Viking Skirmish game and Bob Duncan for his epic foray into the wilds of Darkest Africa. Great job, you guys. If we hadn’t been running games we’d have loved to have played in yours!

The “Irregulars” also brought two dealers with us to NashCon. Our own Stacy Young’s RIVERBLUFF WARGAMES did a nice business in figs, rules, and Stacy’s own excellent home made terrain. One of the newest members of our club is J.C. McDaniel of DEVIL DOG DESIGNS at www.devildogdesign.com J.C. has the FINEST line of 28mm modern miniatures I’ve ever seen, and is publishing a comprehensive set of rules called “Dogs of War”. These figs really are little beauties! If you’re interested in modern skirmish gaming, definitely drop by and visit J.C.

The last thing I’d like to mention is a well-deserved pat on the back to our own club’s GM’s for supporting NashCon this year. The Irregulars hosted 15 games at NashCon over the weekend! That was our best event turnout ever for a weekend convention, and we’re proud of our GM’s. Special thanks goes to Troy Fuller, who ran 4 games in a row using his very nice WWII aircraft. His tables were always full and seemed to be definite crowd pleasers!! Our one gaming default for the weekend was from yours truly, who couldn’t run his CHARLIE DON’T SURF! game on Sunday morning as scheduled. It seems that my entire collection of choppers, figures, and vehicles was purchased the day before by a gentleman and his son! Oh well.. as I said when I passed the boxes over.. “I wanted out of Vietnam worse than Nixon!” My apologies to anyone who had planned on playing in that game and had to find alternative fun on Sunday morning.

See you all at RE-UNION in Memphis!
