One of our GM's at Origins does a beautiful Friedland Battle with 20mm plastic Napoleonics and V&B some of the best French and Russians I've ever seen. He says the whole thing cost him about $30 in figures. Less if he'd bought 2nd hand figures at the convention Flea Market. Also, Something I found: Now available at Dollar Tree are bags of 20mm plastic Cowboys and Indians (about 60 each). I bought 20 bags for the 20mm Wagons inside for 25mm Trains at Borodino'02. But NOW I have 1,200 20mm plastic figures, and after looking closer --- I realize that they are excellent. And with some basic painting and mounting they will make GREAT figures for all kinds of large battles. Starting with Cowboys and Cavalry vs. plains Indians and Little Bighorn campaign battles in 20mm Plastic (which then gives me that battle in 4 different figure scales now!) But I don't need all 1,200 for that though. So ... with minimal conversions I can use them slew of other 19th Century wars options like ACW, Mexicans, and Colonial campaigns like: Boer vs. Zulu etc. With Dollar Store bags of figures, I think I can now do a very pretty and HUGE battle for about $6 in figures. Not that cost is the deciding factor, but it is nice to know you don't have to mortgage the ranch for some wargame fun in a new period.
