19th July 2001 BATTLEFIELD ATTRACTS POLITICAL INTEREST - The President of the Walloon Government, Mr Van Cawenberge visited Mont St Jean on Tuesday 17th July with his ministers. The party of approximately 10 were accompanied by Mr Serge Kubla the Minister for Tourism who is master minding the future plans for development of the Battlefield. INNISKILLING MEMORIAL - With the Memorial now re-erected the President of The Waterloo Committee of Belgium, Mr Jacques Logie, is having the site resurveyed sometime this Autumn with a view to possible reconstruction of the Memorial's base if required. WELLINGTON MUSEUM - 150th Anniversary of the death of the Wellington. An exhibition of the concerning The 1st Duke of Wellington is being planned with other attractions for June - August 2002. EMail: museewellington@museeewellington. co m IMPERIAL GARDE and BRITISH SCHOOL.- Yesterday a UK Schools Battlefield Touring Company took 30 Boys and 13 teachers from St James School,London on their first one day School Tour to Waterloo. During the pouring rain Phillipe and Jean of the 1st Chasseurs deployed against and volleyed the school at La Belle Alliance. The day trip from England allowed the Boys to meet the Garde who briefed them on matters Muskets and Napoleon. WATERLOO UPDATE Serge Kubla the Minister for tourism in Walloon has purchased on behalf of Walloon all the private properties at Mont St Jean in the immediate vicinity of the Visitors Centre. The Bivouac de L'Empeureur,le Mussee de Cires,le Cambronne,les; Allies, and les Hussard and Panorama were purchased for 210 Million Francs (5.205.764 Euros.) The Communes have been allocated a stake in the Panorama. Additional news is that the renovation of the front of Mont St Jean Farm should be complete by Nov 2002. With 2015 in mind the future plans for a Gettysburg type showpiece presentation of the battlefield will be made public in approximately 12 months although Walloon are still seeking further sponsorship. Certain good folk representing an International cross section of support are currently engaged in setting up a framework to assist currently in a non public manner. OTHER NEWS SUGGESTS 1. Barriers will be erected to create a Pedestrian Precinct around the Area of the Visitors Centre at Mont St Jean. 2. A Roundabout will be established between Wellington's Crossroads and the Visitors Centre to take traffic north to a large car park on the reverse slope behind the Allied Line. 3. An underground Museum and shops are planned in the area of the Precinct.
