Panzerschiffe 1/2400
ACW Naval Miniatures

Product Review

by Theron Kuntz

Panzerschiffe has an extensive brand of resin-cast naval miniatures for several periods, including ACK WW1, and WW2. I had bought a few of their ACW products. These are cast clean, for the most part, but a few had some idiosyncrasies of resin molding. Panzerschiffe has offered their ACW brand miniatures as supplementary with Ironclads, a boardgame from Yaquinto Publications. On paragrounds (bases), they will make an attractive display for a naval miniatures recreational event.

These naval miniatures are 1/2400 pictorial ratio, making them rather tiny. (One of the Pook's Turtles, or the city ironclads, a class of seven casemate ironclads, is 22mm in length.) History events have many moments of ACW-era actions: rivers, intercoastal waterways, and international. (Consider the breadth of combined operations, raids, bombardments, and resupply missions.)

The CSS Arkansas, a rebel ram and casemate ironclad, used to outrun a Union Navy gauntlet on the Mississippi river, and Vicksburg and vicinity. The series of the "Arkansas Saga" proceeds:-

At Old River and the Yazoo River on July 15, 1862 vs. the USS Carondelet, USS Tyler gunboat, and the Queen of the West Union ram.

At night near Vicksburg vs. the USS Hartford, USS Winona, and the USS Sumter.

On July 22, 1862 on the Mississippi River vs. USS Essex (ironclad) and the Queen of the West (ram).

The Union gunboat flotilla vs. the Rebel River Fleet near Fort Pillow on the Mississippi River, called Plum Point Bend.

Mound City and Cincinnati are seriously damaged in this action for the cost of two rebel gunboat rams. The Battle of Memphis and New Orleans.

Entertaining but one-sided affairs, in strength, batteries, and technology, identifying a strong and disciplined Union Navy.

The action off Cherbourg, France during June 19, 1864, involving the steam screw sloops, USS Kearsarge (Winslow) and the CSS Alabama (Semmes), a high-seas raider.

So you can comprehend that there are many Military History engagements during the ACW era. These will provide many hours of acceptable recreation for enthusiastic Wargamers, with a budget that will help keep resources in your pocket. Contact Panzerschiffe, P. 0. Box 26074, Akron, OH, 44319, USA.
