The US Phonetic Code

Pre-1947

by Major Bill Harting

Before and during WWII the US used a different Phonetic alphabet than was adopted later by the DoD in 1947. For Instance, during WWII 'E' Company was Easy Company but during Vietnam and later it is Echo Company. At least one set of WWII rules refers to PT boats as Papa Tango's which they never ever ever were called, Peter Tares, yes as that is confirmed by Morrison (US Naval History of WWII).... and I've come across at least one WWII scenario book which names infantry task forces with incorrect designators. So, this is provided for you enlightenment or for when you design WWII scenarios.
